02Overview
What we treat, and how the decision is made
Three problems make up most of the work. The first is fractures in cats and dogs after falls and road accidents. The second is cruciate ligament injury, the commonest cause of hind-leg lameness in dogs. The third is a kneecap that slips out of its groove, called patellar luxation. It is graded 1 to 4 and is seen most in Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, Yorkshire terriers and toy poodles.
Diagnosis starts with watching your animal walk and feeling each joint. X-rays follow, with at least 2 views of the limb. Most are taken under sedation, because positioning a painful leg hurts and a blurred image is useless. An animal hit by a car also has its chest x-rayed before any anaesthetic.
A cast or splint suits only a few fractures: stable breaks below the elbow or knee, mostly in young animals. The rest need plates and screws, pins, wires or an external frame. For a cruciate injury the technique depends on your dog's weight and the angle of the shin bone. A grade 1 kneecap is often managed without surgery. Grades 3 and 4 usually need it. Moving an injured animal
Carry a cat in a carrier with a folded towel under her. Slide a dog onto a board or a thick blanket and lift with 2 people. Do not try to straighten or splint the leg yourself.

Examination and pain relief
The vet checks breathing, gum colour and the belly before the leg. Pain relief comes early. A fracture is rarely the most dangerous injury after a fall.

X-rays
Same visitThe limb is x-rayed from 2 directions under sedation. The vet shows you the images and points out the break or the joint change.

Plan and estimate
You are given the options, including the one the vet would choose, and a written estimate. It lists the implants, the anaesthetic, nights in the inpatient ward and the follow-up x-rays.

Surgery day
No food from 10 PM the night before. Blood is tested that morning. A nurse monitors the anaesthetic from the first injection until your animal is standing.

Home and rechecks
2 weeks and 6 weeksSkin stitches come out at about 2 weeks. A follow-up x-ray at about 6 weeks shows whether the bone is bridging and whether exercise can increase.

Why these injuries happen in Dubai
High-rise falls
Cats fall from open windows and unscreened balconies, and falls from the second floor upward break bones. The usual pattern is a split jaw, broken front legs and a bruised chest. Netting the balcony costs less than one operation.
Road accidents
Dogs let off the lead inside villa communities and community cats sleeping under parked cars make up most road cases. Pelvic fractures are common and many heal with 6 weeks of strict cage rest.
Rehabilitation in summer
Controlled lead walks are part of recovery, and pavement burns paws from May to October. Walk before 7 AM or after sunset. Hold the back of your hand on the ground for 5 seconds first.
Tiled floors
Marble and ceramic floors give a recovering leg no grip. Lay rubber-backed runners or yoga mats along the route from bed to bowl to door for the first 8 weeks.
Indoor months and weight
Dogs walk less through the hot months and gain weight. Every extra kilogram loads a repaired knee. Ask for a target weight at the first recheck.
Swimming
Swimming is useful late in recovery, once the vet clears it. Keep a fresh wound out of pools and the sea until the stitches are out and the skin is sealed.

08Afterwards
The 6 to 8 weeks that decide the result
Bone heals slowly and implants loosen if they are loaded too early. Your dog or cat stays in a crate or one small room for 6 to 8 weeks. Dogs go out on a short lead for the toilet only. That rule holds even when the leg looks normal at week 3, which is when most setbacks happen.
The vet gives you a written exercise plan that lengthens walks in stages after the follow-up x-ray. Pain relief is given exactly as labelled. An animal that stops using the leg again needs to be seen, not rested for longer.
- No stairs, sofas, beds or jumping into the car
- No running loose in the garden and no play with other animals
- Use a towel as a sling under the belly on slippery floors
- Keep the collar on until the stitches are out
- Attend every recheck, including the 6-week x-ray
