Parvo treatment in Dubai for puppies
Parvovirus kills most untreated puppies within days. With hospital care, about 8 or 9 in 10 survive. A rapid test gives a result in about 10 minutes, and treatment is a drip in the isolation ward for 3 to 7 days. Call before you arrive, so your puppy does not cross the waiting room.

01Overview
What parvo does to a puppy
Canine parvovirus attacks cells that divide fast. In a puppy that means the lining of the bowel and the bone marrow. The bowel lining sheds, so food and water are not absorbed and bacteria leak into the blood. The bone marrow stops making white cells, so the puppy cannot fight them.
Most cases are puppies from 6 weeks to 6 months old with no vaccines or an unfinished course. Signs start 3 to 7 days after contact. First the puppy is quiet and off food, then vomiting, then watery diarrhoea that often turns bloody and has a strong smell. A small puppy can be dangerously dehydrated within 24 hours.
The virus is confirmed with a rapid stool test in our lab, or by PCR when the rapid test is unclear. Treatment is supportive care in the isolation ward. Prevention is the puppy vaccination course, finished on time.

Call from home
Before you leaveTell the nurse the age, the vaccines given and the signs. You are told where to wait on arrival. In summer, keep the car running with the air conditioning on until a nurse comes to you.

Straight to isolation
Your puppy is carried in, not walked, and examined away from other patients. The vet checks temperature, gum colour, hydration and belly pain, and weighs your puppy for fluid calculations.

Rapid test and bloods
About 10 minutesA swab of stool is tested for parvovirus. A vaccine given in the last 2 weeks can cause a faint false positive, so tell us the date. Blood shows the white cell count, blood sugar and salts. A very low white cell count supports the diagnosis.

The vet explains the plan and the expected number of nights. You receive the estimate in writing before treatment continues.

Treatment in the ward
3 to 7 daysThere is no medicine that kills the virus. Treatment keeps the puppy alive while its own immune system clears it. That means fluids into a vein, anti-sickness medicine, pain relief, antibiotics against bowel bacteria, and early feeding in small amounts.

Updates and discharge
You get a daily update by phone or WhatsApp. Your puppy goes home when it has kept food down for 24 hours and the white cell count is rising.

Puppies bought online or from markets
Many puppies here are sold at 6 to 8 weeks through online adverts, often recently imported and with a vaccine book that cannot be checked. Book a health check within 48 hours of bringing a new puppy home. Treat the vaccine history as unknown.
Heat and dehydration
A vomiting puppy loses fluid faster in a Dubai summer. Do not wait overnight to see if it settles. Never leave a sick puppy in a parked car, even for 5 minutes.
Shared lifts, lawns and dog runs
The virus survives for months on grass, soil and floors, and it resists most household cleaners. Carry your puppy through the lobby, and keep it off shared lawns and community dog runs until 2 weeks after the last puppy vaccine.
Cleaning the flat
Diluted household bleach is one of the few disinfectants that kills parvovirus on hard floors. Carpets, sofas and garden soil cannot be made safe quickly. Ask us before you bring another unvaccinated puppy into the same home.
Finish the course
One vaccine at the pet shop is not protection. Puppies need a course that ends at 16 weeks or later, because antibodies from the mother can block earlier doses.

In any puppy under 1 year that has not finished its vaccines. Call first so we can take you straight to isolation.

- Diarrhoea with blood, or watery diarrhoea with a strong, unusual smell
- Refusing food for more than 12 hours
- Very quiet, not greeting you, lying in one place
- Pale or sticky dry gums, or skin that stays up when pinched
- Cold legs, a swollen painful belly, or collapse
05Afterwards
After your puppy comes home
A recovered puppy sheds virus in its stool for about 2 weeks, sometimes longer. Keep it away from puppies and unvaccinated dogs for at least 3 weeks, and pick up every stool.
The bowel needs 1 to 2 weeks to heal. Feed the recovery diet in 4 to 6 small meals a day and return to normal food gradually. Vaccines restart when the vet says, usually 2 to 4 weeks after recovery.
- Give every medicine to the end of the course
- Wash bedding hot, and clean bowls and hard floors with diluted bleach
- Weigh your puppy every 2 to 3 days. It should be gaining
- Come back the same day if vomiting or diarrhoea returns
- Tell the owners of any dogs your puppy met in the week before it fell ill
